PRESS RELEASE

Burlington Baseball

11 Year Old Cal Ripken Tournament Team

Advances to New England Regional Championships

The Burlington Ripken 11s made a terrific run through the Eastern Massachusetts Cal Ripken Baseball State Tournament, held in Bourne, MA from July 21-26.  Burlington was one of eight Eastern Massachusetts teams in the tournament.  The other teams were Dracut, Norton, Weymouth, Mashpee, Bourne, Brockton, and Marblehead.

In Burlington’s opening game on July 21 against Dracut, Peter Dawe crushed a first inning grand slam to give Burlington an early lead.  However, Burlington fell to Dracut 15-6, and was forced to the loser’s bracket after their first game.  Facing an uphill battle to reach the finals from the loser’s bracket, Burlington was up to the challenge.

On July 22, Burlington faced Brockton.  This game featured a pitcher’s duel into the fifth with Burlington clinging to a slim 1-0.  However, Burlington rallied in the fifth on consecutive singles by Joey Scali, Sean Murphy, and Anthony Cruz to load the bases.  It was Dawe again, who crushed his second grand slam of the tournament to break the game open, as Burlington went on to win 6-0.  Pitchers Dawe and Cruz combined for the shutout.  Burlington turned three double plays with help from infielders Brien Diffley, Sean Murphy, Ryan McNeill and Jimmy Goober.

On July 23, Burlington faced a tough Marblehead team.  In a pressure-packed game, Burlington scrapped for single runs in the second, third, and fifth to cling to a 3-0 late-inning lead.  Gianni Lecce turned in a strong starting pitching performance, shutting down Marblehead, then turning the ball over to Dawe, who closed the game for the 3-0 victory.   For the third consecutive night, Burlington’s Ibrahim Aburumman was red hot at the plate.  Cruz’s strong play at shortstop, and great catching from Sean Murphy lead Burlington’s defense.

On July 24, Burlington faced Norton.  Burlington trailed 2-1 in the fifth, when Dawe struck again with a huge, momentum changing, three run homerun.  Burlington then broke the game open behind the offense of Shane Farley, Timmy Savage and Harrison Smoske to go on to an 11-2 victory.  Again, Burlington received strong pitching from Lecce and Dawe. With only three teams remaining in the tournament, and playing on its fifth consecutive night, Burlington faced the Dracut club that had defeated them on opening night.  With both Dawe and Lecce in need of some rest, the Burlington 11s turned to Anthony Cruz to take the mound.  Cruz responded with a gutsy performance, pitching into the sixth, and holding Dracut to only two runs.  Cruz received plenty of offensive support from Scali, Diffley, Murphy, Lecce, and the still sizzling Aburumman.  Dawe closed the sixth to seal the 8-2 victory, and the team’s fourth consecutive win.  The victory also earned Burlington a spot in the Easter Mass. finals the next night.

In the finals, Burlington ran up against a fresh and rested Weymouth team.  Burlington fought gamely, but the Weymouth offense was too much, and Burlington lost to finish second in Eastern Massachusetts.  Disappointed with the second place finish (this same group finished second in last year’s 10 year old state tourney), the Burlington 11s received a huge lift after the game, when it was announced that they would be advancing to the Cal Ripken 11 year old New England Regional Tournament, which begins August 3 in Harrison, Maine. In 2007, it was necessary for Cal Ripken New England to pick an additional team to complete the eight team, 11 year old, New England Tournament field.   The Eastern Massachusetts Region, by virtue of its 48 participating cities and towns, is by far the largest New England Cal Ripken State District.  As such, Eastern Massachusetts was chosen to send its second place team.  Based on the virtue of Burlington’s gritty run through the Eastern Massachusetts State Tourney, the Burlington Baseball and Softball Association is proud to send its 11 year olds to the New England’s in Harrison, Maine.

11 Year Old Ripken Tournament Team

Wins District 1 Championship

The Burlington Ripken 11 year olds began the District 1 Tournament on Saturday, July 7, against Framingham National.  Lead by strong pitching from Gianni Lecce, and potent offense from Joey Scali, Sean Murphy, Ibraheem Aburunnam, and Harrison Smoske, Burlington won their opening game 11-1. In the second game, Burlington faced Winchester in what proved to be a preview of the finals.  This time it was Peter Dawe leading Burlington on the mound, and Anthony Cruz at the plate.  Dawe pitched a complete game victory 7-5.  Cruz supplied 5 RBIs by belting two home runs.

In the third game, Burlington remained undefeated stopping Framingham National 12-1.  Again, Lecce was strong on the mound, and Aburunnam, Cruz, and Murphy stayed hot at the plate.

Burlington faced Winchester on July 11 for the title.  Burlington sent their ace, Peter Dawe to the mound.  Dawe received a big lift in the top of the first from his defense when Burlington turned a 6-3-5 double play.  Burlington scrapped for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on singles by Scali, Murphy and Cruz.

The game remained a pitcher's duel into the 3rd when Burlington added three more runs to open the lead to 4-0.  The ralley was triggered by base hits by Murphy, Cruz, Lecce and Dawe and a sacrifice fly by Smoske.

The key play of the game occurred in the top of the 4th when Winchester had a runner on first and no outs.  The next batter hit a line drive to left-center that had extra bases written all over it.  However, Burlington center fielder Ibraheem Aburunnam made a superb diving catch that seemed to deflate Winchester and lift Burlington. From that point on it was all Dawe who slammed the door on Winchester for the 4-0 complete game shut out victory and the District 1 Championship.

Other offensive contributors throughout the Tourney included lead off man Joey Scali, and outfielders Shane Farley and Timmy Savage.  Infield defensive contributions from Ryan McNeil, Brien Diffley and Jimmy Goober were also key in helping Burlington hold their opponents to 7 runs in 4 games.

The Burlington 11 Year Olds now advance to the Ripken EMass State Tournament, which begins July 21 in Bourne, MA.
